HARTWELL, Ga. – About 100 volunteers gathered at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Big Oaks Recreation Area at Hartwell Lake for a picnic commemorating the 20th Annual National Public Lands Day, Sept. 28, 2013. The picnic marked the end of a clean-up campaign at Hartwell Lake that began Aug. 1 and lasted through National Public Lands Day. During the campaign, 450 volunteers picked up a combined total of 9,000 pounds of trash around the lake. The volunteer appreciation picnic was held in partnership with the Lake Hartwell Association.
