Work to begin at former Camp Croft to find and remove WW II munitions

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will begin conducting field work associated with the remedial action for Project 07 at the Camp Croft Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) on Dec. 14, 2020. Project 07 consists of approximately 1,277 acres within Croft State Park in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

The Camp Croft FUDS was a World War II infantry replacement training center from 1941-1946. The remedial action will remove hazards associated with potential munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) items. These MEC items may remain on the property from previous military training activities that occurred at Camp Croft. The remedial action will be conducted all within Croft State Park and consists of vegetation removal, surveying with geophysical equipment, and excavation, removal, and disposal of potential MEC items.

The USACE coordinates this effort with the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism with field work planned through the autumn of 2022. Public access to parts of the state park will be limited as the work progresses but will be kept to the minimum required for public safety.

WESTON Solutions, Inc. of West Chester, Pennsylvania, a company specializing in MEC location and removal, will conduct the work under supervision of the Army Corps of Engineers.
