Corps contractors completing first pass of debris removal in three counties, final pass starts Dec. 30

SAVANNAH, Ga. – With the concurrence of county officials, the first pass of picking up debris generated by Hurricane Michael in Decatur, Mitchell and Seminole counties, Georgia, will be completed Dec. 22.

In anticipation of the final pass, which starts Dec. 30 in each county, residents should place any remaining storm-generated debris along the side of the roadway before the morning of the county's scheduled start date.

Only two types of Hurricane Michael debris are eligible for collection:

  • Vegetation debris - Fallen limbs, fallen or uprooted trees and/or plants on residential property
    • DOES NOT INCLUDE: Agricultural vegetation, like trees or plants NOT on residential property;
    • DOES NOT include Christmas trees
  • Construction & Demolition - Sheet metal, plywood, shingles, siding, fences, drywall, insulation

Residents should separate debris into the two different categories as shown in the illustration. Residents who have debris in the right-of-way that has not been picked up after the second pass starts can contact the following county offices.

  • Decatur County – County Administrator, 229-248-3030
  • Mitchell County – County Administrator, 229-336-2000
  • Seminole County – County Manager, 229-309-3942

Amount of debris collected by Corps contractors, through Dec. 19, under the Federal Emergency Management Agency's debris mission assignment:

  • Decatur County – 736,000 cubic yards
  • Mitchell County – 173,000 cubic yards
  • Seminole County – 800,000 cubic yards
