Roadwork to temporarily close Petersburg Campground at Thurmond Lake

Published March 1, 2019

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Petersburg Campground and Petersburg Bartram Trailhead at Thurmond Lake has temporarily closed to allow for road improvements. The campground is in Columbia County/Appling, Georgia.

To prepare the area for these improvements, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed all access to Petersburg Campground and the Bartram Trail Parking Area adjacent to Petersburg Road on March 1. The Petersburg Road closure will begin at the access from US-221. The area will be reopened once work is completed.

Closures are scheduled to end May 2 according to Charlie Fenwick, Park Operations Manager. “These improvements will be completed in two phases” Fenwick said. “At the end of the first phase on April 4, this area will be opened for 13 days until April 16, to allow access for camping and trail parking. As work is completed, we will begin partial openings at the Petersburg Bartram Trailhead parking access and for campsites within Petersburg Campground.”

During the closure, campers will be able to use nearby Wildwood Park and Mistletoe State Parks, according to Fenwick. Other nearby campgrounds such as Modoc and Winfield will open starting March 29, 2019. Trail users can access Bartram Trail from nearby trailheads at Wildwood, Lake Springs, and West Dam parks.
