J. Strom Thurmond Lake Announces 2021 Campground Openings

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S Army Corps of Engineers, J. Strom Thurmond Lake has announced the 2021 operations schedule for campgrounds.

Petersburg Campground operates 27 sites year-round, with sites 28-93 open from March 5th through December 6th, 2021.

Campgrounds in both Georgia and South Carolina, including Modoc, Hawe Creek, Winfield and Ridge Road campgrounds will be open for the 2021 season beginning March 26th with the last night for camping on October 3rd.

Hawe Creek campground will be operated using volunteers. Campers will be required to make reservations using www.recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777 before occupying a site. Instructions are provided on-site for walk-up campers. The gatehouse will be open seven days a week, 1:30pm to 3:30pm to assist visitors.

New this year, Ridge Road campground will be operated using volunteers. Campers will be required to make reservations using www.recreation.gov or by calling 877-444-6777 before occupying a site. The gatehouse will be open seven days a week, Friday and Saturday 10:00am to 8:00pm, and Sunday thru Thursday 10:00am to 6:00pm to assist visitors.

All five campgrounds offer water and 30/50 amp electrical hookups, flush toilets, showers, boat ramp, and trailer dump stations. Some campgrounds also offer laundry facilities, swimming beaches, and playgrounds. Fees for a single campsite vary from $18 to $28 per night, depending on amenities. Primitive campgrounds, Leroy’s Ferry (McCormick County, SC) and Bussey Point (Lincoln County, GA), are open year-round. These campgrounds feature rustic vault toilets and hand pumps for water. Both campgrounds also have a boat ramp. Camping fees are $10 per night payable by calling 877-444-6777 or visiting www.recreation.gov. Bussey Point campground is highlighted as an equestrian friendly area and has many equine friendly trails within the Wildlife Management Area (WMA) on the trail system, perfect for visitors looking for a place to rest or eat lunch.
