    Savannah District paints a clear picture of the Savannah River bottom with sonar mapping technology

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – Every year, more than six-million visitors travel to walk the cobblestone steps of River Street in historic, downtown Savannah, Ga. An unobstructed view of the Savannah River offers visitors the unique opportunity of viewing some of the largest cargo ships in the world as they pass by under the Talmadge Memorial Bridge on their way to the Georgia Ports Authority’s Garden City Terminal. What they don’t see through the dark water under the passing ships, however, is the 47-feet deep river channel bottom, recently deepened and annually maintained by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District.
  • Metro Savannah-area teachers join marine archaeologists, Civil War re-enactors and other specialists to learn how to integrate science, technology, engineer and math (STEM) lessons from the recovery of the ironclad CSS Georgia into their classrooms. As part of the four-day institute delivered by Georgia Tech University in Savannah, the educators visit Old Fort Jackson, the location where the under-powered warship was anchored in the early 1860s. The visit to Old Fort Jackson allowed them to learn how evolving technology impacted the soldiers and sailors at the fort and aboard the CSS Georgia. Through hands-on demonstrations, the teachers employed several basic engineering and technology actions which can be adapted to classroom instruction. They also observed underwater archaeology techniques used to locate the CSS Georgia wreck on the bottom of the Savannah River. The teachers saw first-hand the methods used to pinpoint thousands of artifacts recovered from the scuttled vessel during 2015. Leading marine archaeologist Stephen James demonstrated the sophisticated equipment used to guide divers through the zero-visibility waters of the Savannah River. The Teachers’ Institute ran from May 31 through June 3, 2016, and was funded through the community involvement portion of the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP). The SHEP will deepen the Savannah harbor from 42 feet to 47 feet.

    Educators turn lessons learned into lesson plans

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The school year continued for 15 educators who returned to the classroom to unearth ways to bring curriculum to life during the CSS Georgia Teacher’s Institute held May 31 – June 3 at Georgia Tech Savannah.

    Jenkins High School's engineering program, located in Savannah, recently achieved Georgia STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program certification, becoming the eighth school in Georgia to receive the accreditation and the first outside of Metro Atlanta. As industry partners with Jenkins, Corps volunteers augment academic curriculum to elevate skills in students studying STEM disciplines at the school’s engineering program.

    The new sonic drill rig on site to perform groundwater investigations near Fort Jackson, South Carolina Jan. 26. The drill rig is a piece of high-tech machinery that is the only one of its kind within the federal government. The Savannah District uses the sonic drill in subsurface and geotechnical investigation projects, serving various state and federal customers throughout the nation. The new sonic drill gives Savannah's drilling team increased capability to drill through all types of soils and most rock.

    Dependents of district employees receive certificates and gather for the Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day held May 1. Facilitators guided participants through age-appropriate breakout sessions as students discovered the district’s expansive footprint on public works projects throughout the Southeast. Participants also tapped into large-scale efforts such as the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project, dam operations, wetlands restoration projects and other salient initiatives during the four-hour event.

    Canton Gardenhire assists Starbase student Tyrese research robots online at DeRenne Middle School in Savannah April 1. Gardenhire devotes two Wednesdays each month collaborating with students on projects covering physics, chemistry sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics operations and applications and STEM careers. The Starbase program is a Department of Defense educational initiative designed to expose at-risk youth to the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines, both on and off military installations.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – An estimated 7,000 students and their families explored potential career paths in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)—including careers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers—during the 5th Annual Student Success Expo and STEM Festival, Jan. 11 at the Savannah Mall. The county-wide event, hosted by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, provided student competitions, interactive displays, and opportunities for students to learn about career paths in both the private and public sectors. Among the multitude of booths that lined the entire bottom floor of the mall, members of the Corps' Regulatory Division (David Lekson, Sarah Wise, Stan Knight, and Donald Hendrix) talked to kids about career paths with the Corps of Engineers.
