| Not just a good idea ... It can save your life! |
Over 6,000 people drown in the U.S. each year. The three major causes of drowning are:
- Not wearing a life jacket
- Drinking alcohol or using drugs
- Poor swimming ability
If you like to play in or near lakes or rivers, please do the following:
- Wear a life jacket
- Learn to swim. Ask your parents for swimming lessons
- Never go near water without your parents or someone else who can swim
- Never depend on inflatable toys, rafts or inner tubes to keep yourself afloat
- Always swim in a safe area, a place that was made for swimming
- Don't push or jump on others
- Never pretend that you are drowning
- Until other help arrives, throw something that floats (ball, ice chest, etc.) to a friend in need
- Never dive into any lake or river. Tree stumps, rocks and floating logs can cause serious injury or death
- In a boating accident, climb onto your boat if you can, and wait for someone to help you
- You can reach for someone in the water with a pole, branch, paddle, etc.
- You can also rescue someone by yelling for help!
