SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, is looking for volunteers to help clean up Richard B. Russell Lake during the annual National Public Lands Day event Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024.

Volunteer can help by gathering litter or any other non-natural debris along the shoreline and islands in and around Russell Lake. Scout groups, civic organizations, church groups, schools, sport clubs, businesses, individuals, and families can all participate.

“This year, we are excited to partner with Richard B. Russell Lake State Park, and Calhoun Falls State Park,” said Corps of Engineers Park Ranger Jon McMahan. “We hope to have many people here fanning out with us to canvas the lake for trash and debris.”

Volunteers can go by boat or vehicle to pick up trash from 9 a.m.-noon around park areas, islands, or anywhere along the shoreline at Russell Lake.

Organizers ask that volunteers take collected trash to either state park for drop off and to be tallied. The day ends at 12:15 p.m. with a free appreciation lunch at the Beaverdam Marina and Adventure Center.

To register, email Jonathan.L.McMahan@usace.army.mil, call the Russell Project Office at 706-213-3400, toll free at 800-944-7207 or scan the QR code on the attached flyer. Once registered, volunteers will receive more detailed information including potential cleanup sites and trash drop-off locations, and lunch details.
