Bussey Point and Leroys Ferry Campgrounds reopen at Thurmond Lake

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, has completed repairs and is now reopening Bussey Point and Leroys Ferry Campgrounds, Friday, Dec. 19, 2025.

Bussey Point and Leroys Ferry are primitive campgrounds with no electric or water hookups. They are both open year-round, and reservations can be made through Recreation.gov.

This marks the 4th and 5th campground reopening by the Corps of Engineers at J. Strom Thurmond Lake since Hurricane Helene hit in September 2024. 

“We appreciate the public’s continued patience and cooperation as maintenance and repairs continue to restore more recreation areas at Thurmond Lake,” said Chrissy Alford, Thurmond park operations manager. “We will provide continue to provide updates as we reopen more of our campgrounds.”

Maintenance and repairs were accomplished by the J. Strom Thurmond Lake team, volunteers, and skilled contractors. Removal of debris was accomplished through funding from the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief for Federally Owned Roads (ERFO).
