SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, has reopened reservations through Recreation.gov for Winfield and Petersburg Campgrounds for the 2026 recreation season, effective March 9, 2026.
Following the damage left behind by Hurricane Helene in September 2024, many campgrounds were closed until repairs could be made. Camping season starts March 27, and campgrounds will be open through Sept. 13, 2026.
To make a reservation, visit:
Petersburg Campground: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232668
Winfield Campground: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232749
Both campgrounds are located on J. Strom Thurmond Lake in Appling, Georgia, and both have spacious campgrounds available for campers to relax and recharge for either a quick weekend escape or a longer stay. Winfield has 80 campsites, and Petersburg has 93 campsites available for reservations.
Maintenance and repairs were accomplished by the J. Strom Thurmond Lake O&M contractor who made the reopening of Winfield and Petersburg campgrounds possible. Removal of debris and associated transportation infrastructure repairs were accomplished through funding from the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief for Federally Owned Roads (ERFO).
The Corps of Engineers appreciates the public’s continued patience and cooperation as work continues to complete maintenance and repairs to restore more recreation areas at Thurmond Lake.
