Corps of Engineers holds Camp Butner FUDS property public meeting virtually March 19

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, is holding a virtual meeting to discuss the Remedial Action (land use controls) completed for Projects 04, 05 and 11 at Camp Butner, a Formerly Used Defense Sites property located 15 miles north of Durham, North Carolina.

During the virtual meeting, there will be a brief presentation and a question-and-answer session to give community members an opportunity to exchange information with the Savannah District representatives regarding completed land use controls for Projects 04, 05, and 11 at Camp Butner FUDS property, which consisted of educational materials distribution and installing warning signs.

Camp Butner encompasses approximately 40,384 acres in Granville, Person, and Durham counties. It was established in 1942 to train infantry, artillery, and engineering combat troops for deployment and redeployment overseas during World War II. The military installation was active from 1942 until 1946; however, training was only conducted through 1943. Following the war, the camp was closed, and the property was conveyed to the Army National Guard, the state of North Carolina, local municipalities, and private owners.
