Some 2026 Summer Recreation Areas Open today at J. Strom Thurmond Lake

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, is opening the following campgrounds and day use areas for the 2026 summer recreation season at J. Strom Thurmond Lake today.

Opening March 27:

  • Lake Springs Day Use Area (Deer Run and Squirrel Nest only; the boat ramp is open year-round)
  • West Dam Day Use Area
  • Modoc Campground
  • Winfield Campground
  • Hawe Creek Campground
  • Petersburg Campground sites 28-93 (sites 1-27 are open year-round)

The reopening of these day use areas and campgrounds was made possible through maintenance and repair efforts performed by the J. Strom Thurmond Lake O&M contractor. Debris removal and associated transportation infrastructure-related repairs were funded by the Federal Highway Administration’s Emergency Relief for Federally Owned Roads (ERFO) program.

Full reopening of Ridge Road Campground, Gill Point Day Use Area, Amity Day Use Area, and Parksville Day Use Area, is still pending additional repair work and will be announced at a later date.
