  • Team Visits Buxton FUDS Property for Post Hurricane Erin Update

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – Officials from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Headquarters and South Atlantic Division were at the Buxton FUDS property in Dare County, North Carolina, alongside the Savannah District commander, Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) Program team and Bay West contractors this week assessing the damage unearthed by Hurricane Erin, to determine the best way forward to clean up the site.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – August 22, 2025 — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District team returned to Buxton, North Carolina, on Thursday, Aug. 21, 2025, to begin a post-Hurricane Erin assessment of the former Buxton Naval Facility, a Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) property within Cape Hatteras National Seashore in Dare County.

  • USACE awards new interim response action contract for Buxton FUDS property

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Savannah District has awarded a contract to initiate a new interim response action and will deploy a contracted team as early as next week to begin work at the former Buxton Naval Facility, a Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) property located within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, in Dare County, North Carolina.

  • Second Buxton FUDS Restoration Advisory Board meeting scheduled

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Restoration Advisory Board for the Buxton Naval Facility Formerly Used Defense Sites property will hold its 2nd meeting July 17, 2025, from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club, located at 47231 Light Plant Road, Buxton, North Carolina. Doors open to the public at 5:15 p.m.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, held its first restoration advisory board for the Buxton Formerly Used Defense Sites property April 10, 2025, to establish the rules, purpose, community co-chair and discuss the next steps for the board.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District’s, website has been updated with the Buxton Formerly Used Defense Sites Property Pipe Removal Report, which summarizes the results of the pipe removal effort and post-removal soil sampling that took place in May 2024.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, is in the process of documenting its determination to establish a restoration advisory board, based on survey responses from the recent public interest survey, for the Buxton Naval Facility, a Formerly Used Defense Site property located within the Cape Hatteras Seashore in Dare County North Carolina.
