Thurmond Lake officials announce rolling ramp closures for repairs

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Officials at the J. Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake announced a rolling closure of boat ramps at the reservoir in order to restripe and repave the ramps before the main recreation season opens. In all cases the ramps will be open on weekends.

Army Corps of Engineers seeks public comments on proposal to renew and revise nationwide permits

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today it is seeking comments on its proposal to renew and revise 50 nationwide permits for work in wetlands and other waters that are regulated by Section 404 of the Clean Water Act and/or Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act of 1899. In addition, USACE is proposing to issue two new nationwide permits that pertain to authorizing the removal of low-head dams and the construction and maintenance of living shorelines.

Bald eagles are thriving in the US; so why are they dying at Thurmond Lake?

SAVANNAH, Ga. -- Its origin is mysterious. Its prevalence ubiquitous. The growing and invasive waterweed known as hydrilla beckons hungry waterfowl, known as coots, who fall prey to a lethal blue-green algae present on its leaves. The American bald eagles that prey on the coots, themselves become prey to the algae.
