Corps of Engineers test confirms strength of dissolved oxygen injection system in Savannah harbor
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The results of tests of the dissolved oxygen (DO) injection system for the Savannah harbor concludes the multi-million-dollar apparatus successfully mitigates for the reduction in DO in the Savannah River due to the current deepening project.

Officials announce master plan update comment period for Hartwell Lake
The public may read and comment on a proposed master plan update for the Hartwell Lake project as officials consider changes to the current guidance on operation of the project’s recreational, environmental, land and wildlife management. The public comment period closes at 12 noon, May 28.

Army Corps of Engineers releases photos of artifacts found in the Savannah River
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Today the Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, posted five photos of artifacts removed from the Savannah River during the week of Feb. 22. The photos show items inadvertently discovered during normal dredging operations. The photos two of the three cannon dating to pre-Civil War times. An anchor and other material were also recovered near the cannon.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – During normal operations and maintenance dredging in preparation for continued deepening of the Savannah River, dredgers under contract to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discovered several historical artifacts that do not appear to be related to the CSS Georgia.

Corps of Engineers announces reduced park operations at Hartwell Lake in 2021
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, announced today it will reduce park operations at Hartwell Lake beginning with the 2021 recreation season due to reduced federal funding for recreation. The Corps intends to lease five Corps-operated recreation areas to local municipalities to reduce the overall operation and maintenance footprint in an effort to maintain a sustainable level of recreation facilities within funding restraints. Reductions in service levels and increased volunteer efforts initiated and implemented throughout the past decade will also continue.

Work to begin at former Camp Croft to find and remove WW II munitions
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will begin conducting field work associated with the remedial action for Project 07 at the Camp Croft Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) on Dec. 14, 2020. Project 07 consists of approximately 1,277 acres within Croft State Park in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Boundary line maintenance at J. Strom Thurmond Project begins
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Workers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District at J. Strom Thurmond Project have begun work to inspect and re-paint approximately 50 miles of the existing boundary line. R&D Maintenance Services, a contractor with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, uses bright orange paint to make boundary line “witness trees” more visible and easier to identify, as well as trimming heavy brush to clear the boundary line between witness trees. This routine boundary maintenance does not move present property lines. The work makes existing property lines more visible.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to resume collection of day use recreation fees at Hartwell and Thurmond Lakes October 1
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) announced today that it will resume the collection of fees at its day use recreation areas beginning October 1. Fee collections were suspended earlier this year when recreation areas were closed due to COVID-19 precautions. Fees will initially be collected only at locations with automated fee collection machines installed. Additional automated fee machines will be phased in at all fee collection sites over the next several months.
