    SAVANNAH, Ga. – Richard B. Russell Lake, commonly referred to as Russell Lake, is situated between the states of Georgia and South Carolina. In a collaborative effort between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District and the Georgia Department of Natural Resources – Wildlife Resources Division, juvenile largemouth bass were recently introduced into the lake to combat ecological damage from invasive fish species.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, used dredged sediment from the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to create a two-acre artificial island for birds along the East River.

    Lisa and Randy Smith dedicated nearly two decades of their lives volunteering together with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. They first volunteered with USACE at the Mill Creek Campground at Berlin Lake in Ohio, and later with USACE, Savannah District at J. Strom Thurmond Lake in South Carolina. After Lisa’s passing Randy continues to volunteer in honor his late wife’s memory.

    Legacy of love: How one man continues to volunteer in honor of his late wife

    Randy and Lisa Smith dedicated nearly two decades of their lives volunteering together with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, assisting rangers at campgrounds, lakes and day use areas. Their journey began in 2004 when they first volunteered with USACE at the Mill Creek Campground at Berlin Lake in Ohio. Their volunteer work continued with USACE, Savannah District at J. Strom Thurmond Lake in South Carolina.
  • Glenda Canty, a contracting officer for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, excels in competitive women’s figure bodybuilding as a hobby. Since 2020, Canty has participated in the sport and is shown displaying some of the medals she has won from her competitions.

    Glenda Canty effortlessly balances two distinct roles with precision: by day, she oversees the allocation of Civil Works contracts for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District as a Contracting Officer and the Civil Works Section Chief. However, as the sun sets, Canty shifts her focus to a markedly different arena: competitive women’s figure bodybuilding.

    Savannah District advances safety initiatives with CE-SOHMS progress

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District has reached a major milestone with the completion of phase two of the Corps of Engineers Safety and Occupational Health Management System (CE-SOHMS).

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, began its aquatic planting season May 2024 at J. Strom Thurmond Lake to bolster biodiversity and prevent shoreline erosion. District personnel and volunteers planted maidencane (Panicum hemitomon) in creeks and coves on both the Georgia and South Carolina sides of the lake.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – J. Strom Thurmond Lake, also known as Clarks Hill Lake, nestled between the states of Georgia and South Carolina, is not only a scenic haven for outdoor enthusiasts, but also a thriving ecosystem teeming with diverse wildlife.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, has removed overgrowth of trees and plants as well as excess sediment from Ditch No. 5, shown here. This ditch is a part of the island’s drainage system designed to efficiently channel excess water away from vulnerable areas, preventing flooding, saltwater intrusion, water stagnation and minimizing soil erosion.

    Corps of Engineers’ drainage project nears completion at Fort Pulaski

    Situated on Cockspur Island at the mouth of the Savannah River, and designated a national monument in 1924, Fort Pulaski has suffered extensive flooding due to storms and heavy rain over the years, which prompted the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, and the National Park Service to collaborate and find a way to manage drainage of the excess water.

    USACE Savannah District Implements Modern Safety Helmets

    In a measure aimed at enhancing worker safety and mitigating the risk of workplace injuries, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, has initiated the replacement of traditional hard hats worn by its personnel with more modern safety helmets. Mandated USACE-wide, this strategic update is designed to offer better protection for employees while working on construction sites.
  • Jason Mock Bailey, volunteer campground park attendant with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, stationed at the Watsadler Campground located in Hartwell, Georgia, found a renewed sense of purpose and self-worth working as a volunteer after he suffered life-threatening injuries from a terrible accident in 1991.

    In May of 1991 Jason Mock Bailey’s life was changed forever after he was electrocuted and fell to the ground from the highest arm of an electrical transmission tower.

    Historic agreements protect bats, pave the way for new infrastructure

    In a win-win for Georgia’s bat species, two first-in the-Nation collaborative conservation agreements were signed during a brief ceremony, Feb. 29, 2024, at the Georgia Department of Transportation Headquarters, in Atlanta.
