  • Thurmond closes 3 more boat ramps due to corona virus

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – Officials at J. Strom Thurmond Lake have closed an additional three boat ramps in cooperation with local law enforcement to help achieve the national individual distancing standards set by the government. Officials previously closed the visitors center and all restrooms, campgrounds and day-use areas (and boat ramps inside those areas) at the reservoir.

  • Corps completes construction of Hutchinson Island Dissolved Oxygen Injection Plant; begins testing

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District has completed construction of the Dissolved Oxygen Injection System plant on Hutchinson Island and today began testing the plant to verify proper operation.

  • Corps’ contractors to complete first pass of debris removal in Lee County Dec. 21, final pass starts Dec. 29

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – With the concurrence of county officials, the first pass of debris collection generated by Hurricane Michael in Lee County, Georgia, will be completed Dec. 21.

  • Corps’ Thurmond Lake Project accepts Christmas trees for recycling

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Thurmond Lake Project Office will accept natural Christmas trees (no artificial trees) for recycling Dec. 21 through Jan. 9, 2019. Artificial trees will not be accepted.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Project Office will accept natural Christmas trees (no artificial trees) for recycling Dec. 26 through Jan. 25, 2019.

  • Corps’ contractors to complete first debris pickup in Dougherty County Dec. 7, begin second pass Dec. 15

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – By the end of Dec. 7, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, working with local government officials, will complete the first pass picking up debris generated by Hurricane Michael in Dougherty County, Ga. In anticipation of the second pass, residents should place any storm-generated debris along the side of the roadway before the morning of the county's scheduled start date for the second and final pass.

  • Corps of Engineers to reveal recommended fish passage alternative for lock & dam

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, are scheduled to give a public presentation announcing the recommended fish passage plan Nov. 14 in North Augusta, South Carolina. In addition to announcing the recommended plan, officials will describe the selection process, provide the status of the analysis with its connection with the New Savannah Bluff Lock and Dam, and discuss the expected impacts to the river.

  • Recreation areas on Hartwell Lake to open for hunting

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hartwell Lake Office will open four of its larger recreation areas for archery and small game hunting during the regular 2018-2019 Georgia hunting season. These areas include: • Paynes Creek Park, Hart County, Georgia (399 acres) • Hartwell Dam Quarry Area, Hart County, Georgia (410 acres) • New Prospect Park, Hart County, Georgia (34 acres) • Jenkins Ferry Park, Stephens County, Georgia (31 acres)

  • Herbicide treatments to begin at Thurmond Lake to kill invasive hydrilla

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will apply herbicide to approximately 205 acres of hydrilla in the J. Strom Thurmond Lake beginning Sept. 6 weather permitting. The chemical application follows plans approved as part of management strategies identified in the April 2016 Avian Vacuolar Myelinopathy (AVM) Plan for the lake project.
