The Buxton Naval Facility FUDS property was initially used by the U.S. Navy as a submarine monitoring station. The U.S. Coast Guard subsequently used the property until it was returned to the National Park Service in 2010. Recently, USACE conducted a response action to remove petroleum-impacted soil and perform confirmatory soil sampling in areas along the beach and dunes that exhibited odors and sheen.
