SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, has initiated a five-year review (FYR) for the Spencer Artillery Range Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) property located in Van Buren, Warren, Sequatchie, and Bledsoe Counties in Tennessee.
There are multiple projects within the Spencer Artillery Range FUDS property. However, Project 01 is currently the only project that has an implemented or partially implemented remedy. Therefore, Project 01 will be the focus of the FYR. During the review, the team will determine if the selected remedy is and will continue to be protective of human health and the environment.
In August 2020, the Corps of Engineers presented a proposed plan for Project 01 to the public and in September 2021, after considering public input, a Decision Document (DD) that selected a remedy to address munitions and explosives of concerns that may remain within the project area was approved. The Corps of Engineers performs FYRs when a remedy is selected for a project, but hazards still remain.
Components of the Project 01 selected remedy include distribution of educational fact sheets, the installation of warning signs, development of a webpage to promote awareness of possible dangers associated with the munitions and explosives of concern that might be present in the area, and to provide educational training for Van Buren and Warren County schools, if requested.
After finalization, USACE will make the FYR available to the public, sometime in late 2026.
