Buxton FUDS Phase II Interim Response Action Contract Awarded

USACE, Savannah District
Published Sept. 15, 2025

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Savannah District awarded a contract Sept. 11, 2025, for phase II of the Interim Response Action at the Buxton Naval Facility, a Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) property located within the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, in Dare County North Carolina.

As part of the 2025 phase II, the contract team will bring in heavy excavation equipment and roll-off containers. Once the equipment is on-site, the team will begin work along the beach to further investigate the site for petroleum-impacted soil and groundwater. They will excavate and containerize any petroleum-impacted soil encountered, transporting and disposing the material at an off-site waste management facility. The equipment is due to arrive within the next two weeks.

The 2025 phase I and II Interim Response Action contracts were awarded to Bay West, LLC, and Eastern Shawnee Bay West JV, respectively. The team has been on-site since Aug. 8, 2025, along with Savannah District members, monitoring the conditions and taking appropriate containment actions, when needed, by placing oil-absorbent booms around any observed petroleum.

The FUDS property is a construction site and is not safe for public and/or media access. Photos and video should be taken from a safe distance outside of the active work and beach closure areas. To request interviews, please contact the Savannah District Corporate Communications Office at cheri.e.dragos-pritchard@usace.army.mil or 912-677-6039.
