Fire temporarily closes Thurmond Dam & Lake visitor center

Published Aug. 20, 2019

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Thurmond Dam and Lake visitor center and offices are closed due to a small fire that occurred late on Aug. 19. The fire, caused by lightning entering the building through wiring, damaged electrical and air conditioning systems which then caused smoke damage. No one was present at the time and no injuries occurred.

Until cleanup crews can restore the facility, workers have been relocated to space inside the dam’s powerhouse, which is not accessible to the public. Telephone service remains but may require callers to leave a message. The toll-free number, 800-533-3478, also remains in service.

The building will remain closed for about a week, according to Scott Hyatt, the Thurmond Project Manager. All other facilities at Thurmond Lake, including campgrounds, boat ramps, day-use areas and swim beaches remain open.

The Thurmond Dam and lake visitor center is located at 510 Clarks Hill Highway in Clarks Hill, South Carolina.
