Published June 23, 2023

CONWAY, SC. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Savannah District, has scheduled a public meeting for July 12, 2023, at 6 p.m. at Horry County Memorial Library-Conway, 801 Main Street, Conway, South Carolina, 29526 - and plans to propose no action be taken at the former Conway Bombing and Gunnery Range (Conway BGR) – Munitions Response Site (MRS) 07 in Conway, South Carolina.

The Conway BGR is a Formerly Used Defense Site that encompasses approximately 55,854 acres in Horry County, immediately northeast of Conway. The southern boundary of the site is situated to the north of the U.S. Hwy 501 and U.S. Hwy 17 intersection, and the Atlantic Ocean is located to the east. The MRS 07 site is located within the southwestern section of the FUDS property.

The property was acquired by the Department of Defense (DoD) between Nov. 2, 1941, and July 17, 1944, to support operations for several bombing and gunnery ranges in the Myrtle Beach and Conway areas as part of the Myrtle Beach Army Airfield. The installation was active from 1941 until 1948; however, training was only conducted through 1947.

The USACE performed a Remedial Investigation (RI), which is documented in the 2018 RI Report. The Army Corps concluded in the 2018 RI Report there are no explosive hazards because munitions and explosives of concern (MEC) were not identified and there are no human health or environmental risks from munitions constituents (MC).

The proposed plan can be viewed at here.
