Savannah, Ga. -- SAVANNAH, Ga – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers sent a support team to assist the City of Atlanta in dealing with the next steps of the water crisis in Atlanta, June 4, 2024.
On Friday, May 31, 2024, multiple main water pipes began leaking in Atlanta. City Mayor Andre Dinkins requested assistance from the Corps.
The Corps is working with the city to investigate the viability of doing a Planning Assistance to States study to perform a full physical and operational assessment of the entire water system with the city of Atlanta.
The PAS Program is authorized by Section 22 of the Water Resources Development Act of 1974, as amended. Under this program, the Corps is authorized to use its technical expertise in water and related land resources management to provide states, public entities within states, and Native American tribes assistance with water resources problems and needs. The Corps conducts planning level investigations and prepares findings in conjunction with a non-Federal sponsor.
