J. Strom Thurmond Lake Recreation Area Seasonal Closures

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, will begin closing or partially closing certain recreation sites for the season at the J. Strom Thurmond Lake beginning Sept. 3, 2024.

Day use picnic areas partially closing Sept. 3:

Campgrounds closing Sept. 8 include:

  • Modoc
  • Winfield
  • Hawe Creek
  • Ridge Road

Campground partial closure:

  • Petersburg Campground will remain partially open. Loop A, sites 1-27, will remain open for reservations. The entire park will reopen March 28, 2025.

Remaining open:

  • The Below Dam South Carolina and Clarks Hill Park Day Use picnic areas remain open
  • All Corps of Engineers-operated boat ramps remain open
  • The Bartram Trail Trailhead remains open
  • Leroys Ferry and Bussey Point Campgrounds remains open year-round
  • Deer Run picnic sites and shelter remains open
  • Sunrise Beach picnic sites remains open
