Published Nov. 22, 2024

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is holding a meeting to discuss upcoming remedial actions taking place at Camp Butner, a Formerly Used Defense Sites property located 15 miles north of Durham, North Carolina.

The meeting will take place Dec. 4, 2024, from 6-8 p.m., at the Butner Town Hall, located at 415 Central Avenue, Butner, N.C., in the multi-purpose room. The meeting will be an open house forum to better allow for the exchange of information between the community and Corps of Engineers representatives, regarding planned land use controls at the Camp Butner FUDS property.

The Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, would like the community to be involved in the environmental restoration process and one topic of discussion for the meeting is determining if there is an interest in establishing a Restoration Advisory Board, or RAB. They would like public feedback regarding an interest in establishing a RAB, and request that inquiries, input or questions regarding establishment of a RAB are submitted no later than Jan. 6, 2025, to Gayle Garland, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, 100 W. Oglethorpe Ave., Savannah, GA 31401, (912) 652-5405 or cesas-FUDS@usace.army.mil.

A RAB is one method the Corps of Engineers uses to facilitate public participation at a FUDS property, and it provides a collaborative forum for the community, government agencies, tribes, and decision makers to discuss and identify the most efficient and productive means to restore the environment. Members of a RAB would meet regularly to review and comment on technical documents and plans relating to ongoing environmental studies and restoration activities at the Camp Butner FUDS property. The RAB members would serve as volunteers and provide individual advice to decision makers on environmental restoration plans. Additionally, they would be expected to serve as liaisons who are available to meet with community members and groups.

Camp Butner is located 15 miles north of Durham, North Carolina, and encompasses approximately 40,384 acres in Granville, Person, and Durham counties. It was established in 1942 to train infantry, artillery, and engineering combat troops for deployment and redeployment overseas during World War II. The installation was active from 1942 until 1946; however, training was only conducted through 1943. Following the war, the camp was closed, and the property was conveyed to the Army National Guard, the state of North Carolina, local municipalities, and private owners.
