SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, is reopening the Hawe Creek Campground at J. Strom Thurmond Dam and Lake Project Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, through Labor Day holiday weekend.
This reopening marks the first campground opening by the Army Corps of Engineers at J. Strom Thurmond Lake since Hurricane Helene hit in September 2024.
The removal of debris and other hazards, along with the completion of maintenance and repairs has made this temporary reopening of Hawe Creek Campground a success story. The reopening is happening just in time for Labor Day weekend, due to Emergency Relief for Federally Owned Roads (ERFO) funding and the hard work and persistence of the J. Strom Thurmond Lake Project team, many generous volunteers and skilled contractors.
The reservation site www.recreation.gov is now available to book stays between Aug. 22 and Sept. 2, 2025. To make a reservation, visit: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/232596
The Corps of Engineers appreciates the public’s continued patience and cooperation as work continues to remove storm debris and restore more recreation areas at Thurmond Lake. The other campgrounds are a work in progress, but the Corps hopes to have more campgrounds ready to open for the 2026 recreation season.
