The Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, announced today it will resume day-use and boat launching fee collection at Thurmond Lake beginning April 2nd and will no longer accept cash at these areas.

Corps' Mt. Carmel Campground to Re-Open under New Name and Operation
Savannah, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Savannah District at J. Strom Thurmond Project announces that Mt. Carmel Campground in McCormick County, SC has been leased to KWGM, LLC and will re-open to the public as Hester’s Bottoms Campground.

Thurmond Lake to Close Ridge Road Boat Ramp to Day Users
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S Army Corps of Engineers, J. Strom Thurmond Lake is changing access to its Ridge Road Boat Ramp to Ridge Road campers only. This change will begin March 26, when the Ridge Road Campground opens this year.

Army Corps of Engineers releases photos of artifacts found in the Savannah River
SAVANNAH, Ga. – Today the Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, posted five photos of artifacts removed from the Savannah River during the week of Feb. 22. The photos show items inadvertently discovered during normal dredging operations. The photos two of the three cannon dating to pre-Civil War times. An anchor and other material were also recovered near the cannon.

Corps of Engineers discovers unexpected artifacts while dredging Savannah harbor
SAVANNAH, Ga. – During normal operations and maintenance dredging in preparation for continued deepening of the Savannah River, dredgers under contract to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discovered several historical artifacts that do not appear to be related to the CSS Georgia.

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The J. Strom Thurmond Lake Project, Forest, Fish & Wildlife Section will suspend all turkey hunts at Bussey Point Corps Management Unit, located in Lincoln County, Georgia, for the foreseeable future.

Corps of Engineers announces reduced park operations at Hartwell Lake in 2021
SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Savannah District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, announced today it will reduce park operations at Hartwell Lake beginning with the 2021 recreation season due to reduced federal funding for recreation. The Corps intends to lease five Corps-operated recreation areas to local municipalities to reduce the overall operation and maintenance footprint in an effort to maintain a sustainable level of recreation facilities within funding restraints. Reductions in service levels and increased volunteer efforts initiated and implemented throughout the past decade will also continue.
