    Jenkins High School's engineering program, located in Savannah, recently achieved Georgia STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) program certification, becoming the eighth school in Georgia to receive the accreditation and the first outside of Metro Atlanta. As industry partners with Jenkins, Corps volunteers augment academic curriculum to elevate skills in students studying STEM disciplines at the school’s engineering program.

    Corps’ partnership with school leads to academic accreditation

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – A pair of Savannah District leaders form links in the chain of community partners aiding a local school to achieve academic excellence in the scientific and mathematical fields.
  • Dependents of district employees receive certificates and gather for the Take our Daughters and Sons to Work Day held May 1. Facilitators guided participants through age-appropriate breakout sessions as students discovered the district’s expansive footprint on public works projects throughout the Southeast. Participants also tapped into large-scale efforts such as the Savannah Harbor Expansion Project, dam operations, wetlands restoration projects and other salient initiatives during the four-hour event.

    Corps opens doors, minds for career day event

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – District offices became a proxy classroom for more than 40 dependents of employees who explored Corps projects and careers during the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day held May 1.

    Canton Gardenhire assists Starbase student Tyrese research robots online at DeRenne Middle School in Savannah April 1. Gardenhire devotes two Wednesdays each month collaborating with students on projects covering physics, chemistry sciences, technology, engineering, mathematics operations and applications and STEM careers. The Starbase program is a Department of Defense educational initiative designed to expose at-risk youth to the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines, both on and off military installations.

    Sarah Wise, Corps regulatory specialist, accepts the district’s award of appreciation from Megagenesis director, Dr. Zke Zimmerman, presented to recognize the district’s consistent support at the annual event.     SAVANNAH, Ga. – Millions of students are plagued by the age-old question, “What do I want to do for a living?” but the Corps helps to rectify this enigma by offering industry exposure to students at statewide outreach events.

    Regulatory Division members demonstrate their flood plains model at Jenkins High School for National Engineer Week Feb. 25.     Why should American students care about pursuing engineering careers? Officials with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are communicating the answer to students throughout the year—and especially during National Engineers Week, which runs this year from Feb. 16 through Feb. 22.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – An estimated 7,000 students and their families explored potential career paths in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics)—including careers with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers—during the 5th Annual Student Success Expo and STEM Festival, Jan. 11 at the Savannah Mall. The county-wide event, hosted by the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, provided student competitions, interactive displays, and opportunities for students to learn about career paths in both the private and public sectors. Among the multitude of booths that lined the entire bottom floor of the mall, members of the Corps' Regulatory Division (David Lekson, Sarah Wise, Stan Knight, and Donald Hendrix) talked to kids about career paths with the Corps of Engineers.
