    HARTWELL LAKE, Ga. and S.C. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, recently conducted an “Aids to Navigation” inspection on Hartwell Lake to inventory all buoys, shoal markers and other aids to navigation to ensure proper placement, working condition and visibility.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, implemented flood risk management operations at the J. Strom Thurmond Project Dam when rain exceeded forecasted levels through portions of Georgia and South Carolina, which caused the lake and downstream river to rise. Currently, inflows into Augusta and Thurmond are starting to decrease, and spillway gates do not need to be opened.

    SAVANNAH, Ga. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, J. Strom Thurmond Project, recently launched a free fishing application for public use called “J. Strom Thurmond Fishing Map.” The web-based application is designed to assist boat and bank anglers in digital planning, ground referencing features, and areas of interest.

  • Dredging complete for Savannah Harbor Expansion Project

    SAVANNAH, Ga. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District, announced the deepening portion of the Savannah Harbor, and the associated shipping channel, were completed March 8. This project is part of a 23-year effort to deepen the Savannah River from an authorized depth of 42 feet to 47 feet and extend it seven miles further into the Atlantic.

  • USACE Engineers Participate in Simulated Oil Spill Exercise

    J. STROM THURMOND DAM, Ga. – Members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Savannah District participated in a tabletop exercise simulating a power plant oil spill at J. Strom Thurmond Dam on Feb. 10. The exercise presented a worst-case scenario of an oil spill with the intention of helping personnel become properly prepared and know the detailed procedures needed to handle such a situation.
